Glanzmann's thrombasthenia, what to know?

Image
Glanzmann's thrombasthenia is a rare inherited bleeding disorder caused by a defect in the platelet integrin αIIbβ3, which affects platelet aggregation. Treatment generally focuses on managing bleeding episodes and preventing excessive bleeding. Here are some of the common treatment options: Platelet Transfusions : In cases of significant bleeding or prior to surgery, platelet transfusions can provide the missing platelet function. Desmopressin (DDAVP) : This medication can increase the release of von Willebrand factor and factor VIII, which might help improve platelet function in some patients with mild forms of Glanzmann's thrombasthenia. Antifibrinolytic Therapy : Drugs like tranexamic acid or aminocaproic acid may be used to prevent the breakdown of blood clots, especially during dental procedures or surgery. Recombinant Activated Factor VII (rFVIIa) : In cases of severe bleeding, rFVIIa can be used to help promote clotting in the absence of normal platelet aggregation. G...

HMPV virus, what to know?

Image
Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is one of the viruses that causes the common cold (upper respiratory infection).  It usually makes people only mildly sick, but it can make some people very sick . The virus belongs to the Pneumoviridae family of viruses, along with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test is the most reliable way to diagnose hMPV , giving accurate results within a few hours. However, doctors may not suggest this test for people with cold or flu-like symptoms as there is no specific treatment for hMPV infection, and in most cases, it causes mild disease. Two rapid antigen detection methods are available:  an immunofluorescent-antibody test and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) . The ELISA method with mouse polyclonal antibodies to hMPV has been reported to enable detection of hMPV antigens of hMPV-infected cells in culture
