Sepsis: How to Recognise, Act, and Save Lives

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency caused by the body’s extreme response to an infection. It can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death if not treated promptly. Early recognition and action save lives.

🧠 What is Sepsis?

  • A serious complication of infection

  • The body’s immune system overreacts, damaging its own tissues and organs

  • Can result from infections such as:

    • Pneumonia

    • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

    • Skin infections

    • Abdominal infections

    • COVID-19, flu, or dengue

⚠️ How to Recognise Sepsis (Common Signs)

Use the "TIME" acronym for quick recognition:

T.I.M.EWarning Signs
TTemperature – very high or very low
IInfection – signs of infection, wound, cough, etc.
MMental Decline – confused, sleepy, difficult to rouse
EExtremely Ill – severe pain, shortness of breath, pale or mottled skin

Other red flags:

  • Rapid heartbeat

  • Rapid breathing

  • Low blood pressure

  • Cold, clammy skin

  • Decreased urine output

👶 In Children & Infants

Look for:

  • Very fast breathing

  • Fits or convulsions

  • Very pale or blue skin

  • Rash that doesn’t fade when pressed

  • Lethargy or difficulty waking

  • Not feeding, vomiting

🚨 What To Do (Act Fast!)

  1. Suspect sepsis? Act immediately!

  2. Go to the emergency room or call emergency services

  3. Say clearly: “I am worried about sepsis.”

  4. Early treatment with antibiotics, fluids, and oxygen is vital

🛡️ How to Prevent Sepsis

  • Treat infections early

  • Stay up to date with vaccinations

  • Maintain hygiene (handwashing, wound care)

  • Manage chronic illnesses

  • Seek medical care for infections that don't improve
